Hi-score Girl.
« on: March 26, 2019, 03:08:59 AM »
Since you have been getting me hooked on shows, I think its about time for me to try and get you hooked on something!

Netflix has a quirky show about a pair of kids that grow up during the golden age of gaming, and basically falling in love over Street Fighter 2. It's called Hi-Score Girl. It's funny at times and quite endearing too, check it out if you didn't yet.
Sincerely,

Sir Logan Johnson, Esq. XIII.

Season 2, or rather 1.5 has dropped a few weeks back without me noticing, but suffice to say, it really gets a nice slow-boil going!

The protagonist (Haruo) is caught in a love-octagon (like a love-triangle, but with 8 sides) between 3 or 4 girls that seem to be drawn in by his aloof-gamer nature, his love of video games, and loyalty to the multitude of consoles and arcades that dot his life.

The odd thing about the girls, is that they are only able to get remotely close to him by also becoming gamers and attempting to beat him at various games so that "SENPAI NOTICES ME!" finally and at least they get a odd cold-shoulder of "git gud" from him that frustrates them to train harder on games like Street Fighter, Samurai Showdown, Virtual Fighter, and Tekken.

There is the standard Japanese high school humour, mixed with retro game references and overall nostalgia of the 80's and 90's.

If you like Anime Tropes mixed with Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, this is going to fill that void in your heart!
Sincerely,

Sir Logan Johnson, Esq. XIII.

They did have a season 2. Pretty much more of the same, except they are/were in high school instead of grade/middle school. I actually didn't notice when  I was watching as it just blended together.

I understand about 50% to 75% of the jokes as some of the games they reference, I have never had a chance to play... and that makes me sad. Luckily I can half-ass my way through the Street Fighter references because not much has changed since SF2. I also got my girlfriend hooked on it along with Aggresuko.
Sincerely,

Sir Logan Johnson, Esq. XIII.

Yesssss! Another convert! Soon the whole internet will join us!

Also if you want a good drama anime, try Violet Evergarden on Netflix. I cried a lot... it was a good cry. It's about war and loss, and new beginnings.

According to a quick google search it seems the Japanese airing will be october 13th or 15th (not sure why they gave 2 days).

I'm not sure if this reflects Canadian Netflix as well, but good to hear!

Me either! This is one of the few good Netflix exclusive anime i really like to watch and hope that it keeps going for more than 2 seasons... although Netflix seems to keep the lousy ones going for longer than they need to... I managed to get through all the King Julian and Puss in Boots cartoons... it was a little repetitive, but i guess thats the price of watching a show geared towards kids.
